    Richards upbeat after silver medal

Despite being so close to winning gold, Team GB's Matthew Richards reflected on the final:

"I can't be too disappointedwith that. It's my first individualevent at the Olympic games, so to walk away from that with a silver medal is fantastic. Obviously 0.02 seconds off goal is excruciatinglyfrustrating, but if anything it has added more fire to my belly. Myself and Duncan - second andfourth - I'm gutted for him, if anyone deserves a medal, it's him.

"It fuels me on for the rest of this week, I've got the 100m starting tomorrow.

"I thought I had got it, but it wasn't my best finish, it didn't feel bad, but I did feel like I had done enough, but the time says differently. It's not a sport where it's up for debate, it's black and white.

"I'm 21, I've got a long time to go in this sport, I want another 10 years before I even worry about hanging my goggles up. It's all good learning and we will take that forward into the rest of the week."

MAX WHITLOCK missed out on a seventh Olympic medal as Britain were edged into fourth place in the gymnastics team final.

Three-time gold medalist Whitlock came out of retirement for the Paris Games and nailed his opening pommel-horse routine as Team GB led after the first rotation of the eight-team final.

That best score of the day suggested Whitlock, 41, could bag a third individual pommel-horse gold on Saturday.

But despite a superb rings performance from 20-year-old Olympic rookie Harry Hepworth, Luke Whitehouse made a mess of his vault to leave the Brits up against it for a place on the podium.

Yorkshireman Hepworth was Britain’s star, scoring highly on the vault and the floor, but the United States pipped Team GB - who also included Jake Jarman and ‘Smokin’ Joe Fraser - to bronze by just 2.3 points.

Japan snatched gold away from China right at the death, when Weide Su twice fell off the horizontal bar, leaving the Chinese gymnast inconsolable.
