Writing an email in Spanish as a language learner is not as difficult as making a phone call in Spanish. When writing, you have more time to think, and words come out easier. Still, it can be challenging at times.

There is some key vocabulary that will make your life easier when it comes to writing emails and sound like a real Spaniard.

How to Start an Email in Spanish

A greeting should never be omitted. You will use different degrees of formality depending on whom you are writing to.

Below are the most common greetings in Spanish when starting an email.

Some Rules

Even thought to adding a comma after the name (as in English) is common, this is a mistake.

Example

  • Querida Ana,

Instead, a colon should be used after the name.

Example

  • Querida Ana: ✔️

Also, you add a comma after greetings such as, hola or buenos días, and before the name.

Finally, after the colon, you capitalize the first letter.

Some Rules

For short goodbyes (without a verb), use a comma.
